More Social Workers Needed
The recent story of a family suicide that took away the life of a 13 year-old girl, has greatly shocked the nation. To prevent similar tragedies from occurring, the Ministry of the Interior will be hiring more social workers starting next year, with a goal of doubling its staffs by the year of 2016.
This is the family portrait drawn by a young girl in Nantou. From the illustration, the father is at the top of the pyramid, which shows how important her dad is to her.
However, he was not there when she needed him the most. This April, the 13-year-old girl's mother took both of their lives in a family suicide. Even though there were signs of her crying for help, some say that the social workers were not trained professionally enough to recognize them.
On the other hand, not having sufficient social workers is another problem in today's society. After her death, hundreds of social workers have protested in front of the Ministry of Interior, demanding for more staffs to be provided at their division.
In response to their request, the department will be doubling its workers starting next year until the year of 2016.
With this increase, each social worker will be serving 7,000 people instead of 14,000 individuals.
At the same time, the civil groups are suggesting a reasonable salary adjustment to keep the skilled professionals.
The department said that once the calculation for the new staffing is at hand, more funding will be made by local governments after rigid evaluations and estimates to help those in need.
