In order to shrink Taiwan's wealth gap, Premier Wu Den-yi made a proposal of taxing the wealthy, stressing that, under the support of the Legislative Yuan and supervision of the society, he would ask the Ministry of Finance to start drafting luxury tax and separate interest tax regulations.

The greater Taipei real estate prices are getting more expensive for most of the people to afford, however, those few who are rich enough are buying million dollar mansions one after another.

Faced with the growing wealth gap, Premier Wu Den-yi said that one way is to tax the rich, especially punish heavily on those rich individuals with tax evasion.

Wu stressed that, under the support of the Legislative Yuan and supervision of the society, he would ask the Ministry of Finance to draft luxury tax regulations, especially those on the top of the pyramid, the 5% who can afford mansions, private jets and luxury items, would have to pay an additional luxury tax.

In addition, tax regulation on interest earned would also be his consideration. The KMT is reserved on the topic for it is close to the year-end election, while the DPP criticized Wu for putting on a show before the election.

The ministry of finance released a statement saying that, currently, there aren't such taxes in Taiwan and what Wu said is currently in research stage.
