Premier Wu Steps in to Settle
The dispute of farmland expropriation of Dapu in Miaoli has escalated.
To curb the possible political effects, President Ma Ying-jeou personally gave instructions to Premier Wu Den-yih to handle the crisis on the central government's behalf.
Last night, Wu talked to representatives of the Dapu Self-help group, Miaoli County magistrate Liu Cheng-hong and related officials to have a face-to-face negoation.
Although Wu proposed a compromised win-win plan, Liu remained strong and tough, unwilling to change his mind.
Therefore, the round of talk ended without reaching a consensus and the Self-Help group claims it might aggravate the dispute.
Miaoli County Magistrate Liu Cheng-hong was summoned to the Executive Yuan in Monday evening, and farmers of the Dapu Self-Help group soon followed.
Premier Wu Den-yih is to handle the crisis derived from the farmland expropriation by himself.
During the one-hour long meeting, farmers say that they feel the sincerity of Wu but Liu remains tough and strong.
Farmer representative Ms. Yeh even cried twice in the meeting.
At the end, Liu left alone and the meeting concluded without any solution or action.
Liu didn't concede and refused to apologize.
Premier Wu tried to propose a compromised win-win plan, hoping the farmers and the Miaoli County government can work out a solution.
Although Wu has shown great sincerity and farmers' rights groups and scholars are invited to a meeting Tuesday morning to discuss solutions, Liu's attitude will be the critical role in the success of resolving the dispute.
If Liu doesn't change his attitude, the Self-help group claims to elevate the protest scale in the near future.
