Reductil Controversies
A recent study shows that the weight loss pill, Reductil, contains an ingredient that would lead to higher blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In response, the Department of Health will make further assessments accordingly and then decide whether the product should be taken off the market.
Reductil which has purported to aid in weight loss not only may not be effective in its claims, it might even cause strokes.
The manufacturer of the drug has recently published a research report saying that using Reductil will cause a 28% rate increase in heart disease and a 36% rate increase in strokes.
Studies conducted in the UK and the USA have also continually found that usage of the drug will result in an increase in cardiovascular disease.
According to the Department of Health, Reductil contains Sibutramine.
Sibutramin raises blood pressure and heart rate, which are the primary causes of stroke.
Although Taiwan has yet to hear of negative reactions from users of Reductil, the DOH has issued a policy requiring pharmacies to put on a label warning people with cardiovascular disease against using the drug.
Since its introduction to the market in 2001, over 2000 reports have been received globally of negative reaction to the drug and 17 deaths.
The Taiwan DOH will host a panel on September 16th to evaluate whether to allow the drug to stay on the market.
