Milk Shortage
The summer heat has led to major shortages of fresh milk on the market as it is estimated that now there is a 150 ton gap in fresh milk supply and demand each day. Consumers are advised to purchase yogurt or flavored milk instead, for the time being.
Housewives are taking advantage of times when there are fewer people shopping for fresh milk as later in the day this shelves may be sold out.
There is less and less milk seen on these shelves as milk companies are rushing to deliver stocks.
Here we see these bottles lined up and within half an hour they are sold out.
The main reason is the heat of summer and high temperatures frequently exceeding 36 degrees or 38 degrees, which is reducing the milk yield of dairy cattle by making them eat less.
The Council of Agriculture says that according to past data, typical daily supply of fresh milk is around 1,000 tons, but now, supply only reaches 850 tons a day leading to a serious shortage of 150 tons.
Also, this supply is 3% less than a year earlier as the average retail price per kilogram is higher by 2 NT$ than the same period a year ago.
The COA says that if milk is out of stock, consumers may choose other dairy products like yogurt or flavored milk which has a relatively stable price.
Otherwise, one will have to wait till October and the arrival of cool autumn weather to see an improvement in the current milk shortage condition.
