NO MORE SHARK FINS IN TOP HOTEL?
The owners of one of Asia's most prestigious hotel chains have made up their minds about not serving shark fin products for good, starting next year.
Don't be surprised if you can't find shark fin related dishes on the menus at the luxury Peninsula Hotels chain, because they will be banning the sales of the Chinese delicacy, effective January 1st, 2012.
In the latest statement, the group's chief executive officer, Clement Kwok, said, they hope that the decision of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels group, which is the parent company of The Peninsulas Hotels, can "contribute to preserving the marine ecosystem for the worlds future generations."
An estimated of 73 million sharks are slaughtered each year for their shark fins, with Hong Kong alone importing about 10,000 tonnes of fins annually for the past decade.
