"TWILIGHT" BREAKS RECORD AT NO.1
The wedding of the year for vampires attracted twilight fans around the world, with the highly anticipated flick, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt. 1" opening at number one, crushing other competitors.
As the second biggest opening of the year, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 grossed in an estimated 139.5 million US dollars over the weekend, which was only 2% lower than the 142.8 million US dollars of "New Moon" from two years ago. It is also the fifth best opening weekend of all time trailing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2($169.2M), The Dark Knight ($158.4M), Spider-Man 3 ($151.1M), and New Moon.
Not as warmly received in their sequel were the dancing penguins in "Happy Feet Two," which opened at No.2 with 21.2 million US dollars. The second installment only took in around half of what the first Happy Feet made, which is 41.5 million US dollars on its debut weekend in 2006.
Last week's top film "Immortals" fell sharply to No. 3 in its second weekend, grossing an estimated 12.3 million US dollars, down 62 percent, while last weekend's No.2 Jack and Jill also plummeted 52 % to No. 4, at an estimated 12 million US dollars.
No. 5 went to "Puss in Boots," which dropped 57 percent to an estimated 10.7 million US dollars. What's worth noting is that George Clooney's new flick, "The Descendants" made its way to the Top 10 list with 1.2 million US dollars from just 29 theaters. Descendants, a likely Oscar contender in picture, actor, and other races, will be available in 425 theaters today, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. It serves as an alternative option for adult audiences at a time when kid pics are flooding the marketplace.
