The latest U.S. report shows that we may be getting only half of the protection we need from most of the sunscreens that are on the shelves.

A new rule is underway to ensure our health, and here on CTS, we explain what we should look for in sunscreens, beyond the SPF level.

When it comes to choosing sunscreen for a day out on the beach, we tend to select the product based on the SPF level, but the latest U.S. report is saying that is just not enough.

Most of the products out there only indicate the SPF number, which informs us about how well it can protect us from ultraviolet B light, while it has no information regarding the cancer-causing Ultraviolet A light.

The sun has two kinds of harmful rays, the UVB light, which primarily causes sunburn, and the UVA light, which penetrates our skin further, making us tanner.

But what we don't know is that the UVA light is just as dangerous, if not more, because it can potentially cause cancer.

Most products only provide ingredients to protect us from UVB rays, thus, it does not guard us from the UVA rays. In other words, we are not getting all the protection we think we are getting from the sunscreens.

The U.S. government is now demanding the manufacturers to contain ingredients in the sunscreens to guard against both UVB and UVA rays starting next summer. In addition, the sunscreens will need to have a SPF level of at least 15 to claim that it can prevent skin cancer, and skin aging.

Sunscreen companies will no longer be allowed to use the term "waterproof" or "sweatproof", because that is far from being the truth.

Experts are reminding the public to apply sunscreen every two hours, and to look for products that can protect us from both UVB and UVA rays to minimize the risk of skin cancer.
