TAIPEI DOME RECEIVED CONDITIONAL APPROVAL
The Taipei Dome project has finally received a conditional approval earlier this month from the Taipei City's Department of Environmental Protection after nearly four years of review.
The city government has demanded the BOT contractor, Farglory Group, to scale down the complex over fears that the hotels and the shopping center attached to it will disturb the traffic flow in nearby areas.
In response to the evaluation result, Farglory Group said that it now has to review the terms before deciding whether to build it or not.
The Taipei City's Department of Environmental Protection's review committee earlier last week gave a conditional green light to the Taipei Dome construction project, despite ongoing protests by environmental activists and local residents who oppose the commercial complex on the abandoned Songshan Tobacco Factory.
The review committee voted 8 against 5 to approve the project as long as Farglory scales the complex down by 17%, which is 42,000 square meters.
The committee members expressed their concerns over Farglory's plans to build a commercial complex around the Dome, including a shopping center, movie theater, hotel, and office building, which may bring negative impact to local traffic.
In response, Farglory says that it needs to assess the financial feasibility of constructing the complex and whether the project is still economically viable if it is scaled down.
Environmental groups, meanwhile, are unsatisfied with the committee's decision, saying that they will file a motion to invalidate the ruling.
Actually, back in last June, the review committee has already rejected Farglory's project over concerns that the huge commercial facilities would affect local traffic.
However, new committee members still failed reach a consensus over the project, leaving the Taipei Dome an unsatisfactory approval.
