MA PAYS TRIBUTE TO YOICHI HATTA
The Tourism Bureau has established a memorial park to commemorate the designer of the Chianan Canal, Yoichi Hatta, who made great contribution to the promotion of agricultural production in the Chianan Plain during the Japanese colonial period.
The Ten Drum group performed officially starting this opening ceremony. It is the Wushantou reservoir's Yoichi Hatta memorial park.
The location was originally a residence used by Hatta and his staff though it fell into a state of disrepair.
Hatta is the father of the Chianan Canal, contributing water to the Chianan Plans.
Two years ago, the park undertook major repair.
Hatta was in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period and helped make the Chianan Plain very fertile.
Since his contribution, many have been grateful.
President Ma Ying-jeou expressed his thanks and respect, saying that he has been lifelong friends with some Japanese people.
President Ma and former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori scooped water from a the bucket symbolizing the hope that people will never forget the past.
Mori also specifically thanked Taiwanese people for their earthquake donations.
The Yoichi Hatta Memorial Park, took nearly 2 years to complete, costing 100 million NT dollars.
It tried to maintain the original style even using Japanese carpentry techniques.
Even a road outside the park was named after Yoichi Hatta.
