PROTESTS AGAINST NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS
Protesters were seen on the street across the island on Saturday, in showing opposition against the operation and construction of nuclear power plants in Taiwan. Marching from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall to the Presidential Office, the people held sunflowers in their hands, demanding a nuclear-free homeland and a safe environment for the future generation.
The crowd marches on the streets on April 30th holding sunflowers, a symbol of cleanliness and longevity. They demand they don't want nuclear, only a future for their kids.
A group of young students work hazmat suits and carried a waste barrel to protest against the government's assurance that nuclear energy is clean, but the lack of government disclosure on radioactive pollution and waste.
There were also Japanese residents from the disaster area participating in this march. Besides Taipei, marches were also held in Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Taitung. Protesters demanded that the number 1, 2, and 3 old nuclear reactors be shut down, and work should be stopped on the number 4 nuclear power plant that's currently being built.
But TaiPower said after this Japanese disaster, the company will review its entire nuclear system to make sure its safe. TaiPower promised it will release its plan to improve earthquake effectiveness and proper disposal of nuclear waste before the end of October.
But the protestors in Taipei laid down on Ketagalan Blvd to show that no one would be able to hide from a nuclear disaster. They demand a nuclear free nation with clean energy because Taiwan cannot afford a nuclear disaster.
