DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen is retaliating after several media interpreted her proposed "nuclear free homeland project" in a wrong manner. She emphasizes that she will first request for the public's approval, before deciding on the shutdown of the power plant, if she wins the presidential race.

She further explains that the termination process will be subjected to different conditions, including whether Taiwan is capable of replacing the electricity produced by the plants with alternative power sources, which is not the same as the policy set forth by the Chen Shui-bien administration in 2000.

This is not the same thinking of the policy to halt the building of the 4th nuclear power plant in 2000.

The process of the construction was a huge controversy.

After the journey, everyone agrees, the ruling and the opposition agree to work towards a nuclear-free homeland as our goal. But we didn't have a concrete action plan when we started at the time.

That's why we hope to propose the plan of a nuclear-free homeland in 2025, as an effective action plan where everyone can think and discuss.

According to Tsai, under the plan, Taiwan would aim to phase out nuclear energy by 2025, if not sooner, pending the development of other energy sources. On top of stopping operations of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant, existing nuclear plants one, two and three would be decommissioned on schedule.
