ATTRACTING THE YOUNG TO LEARN
Writer Lian Shu Huei has spent ten years to come up with a new teaching strategy in promoting Taiwanese to the younger generation. With audio recordings and vivid images, the children are given the chance to learn the dialect in a fun manner.
With colorful pictures, Roman spelling it is easy to read out the Taiwanese language.
It is the new teaching material for children to learn Taiwanese using English letters.
A game was also designed to teach children the 5 facial expressions when saying Taiwanese.
Writer Liang Shu Huei is the instructor of Taiwanese at the Chung Shan medical school, who spent 10 years time, with the support from the Presbyterian church of Taiwan, designed a set of Taiwanese language teaching materials for children. It is her effort to try to make children interested in learning the language.
Those groups that promote the Taiwanese language called out to the Ministry of Education that it needs to face the problem of shortage in native language teaching staff shortage and the mixed quality teaching materials.
Currently, elementary school students are required to have one native language class per week while the MOE doesn't offer the pre-approved teaching materials.
Taiwanese language teachers can be certified with 72 hours of training. Those groups are saying that, there are so many different ways of phonetic learning, the MOE needs to unify the teaching method to allow kids to get to know the Taiwanese language.
