GUARDING THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN
In a bid to promote the rights of children, a local child advocacy group issued a manifesto on the National Children's Day, which demands the government to help create a safer environment for the nation's youngest members, starting by taking more effective legislative measures against child molestation.
On Children's Day, civic groups released a "Children's Rights Manifesto" calling on the public to assist and protect children from pedophiles.
The number of child sex abuse cases has risen significantly in recent years, and civic groups are calling for harsher sentences for child sex offenders.
Activists are also calling for the names and pictures of sex offenders to be made public and asking the Legislative Yuan to change the name of the "Child and Youth Sexual Transaction Prevention Act" to "Child and Youth Commercial Sex Exploitation Prevention Act."
Parents and children taking part in the movement are asking the public to sign petitions that will be sent to the Legislative Yuan, and hope to collect 200,000 signatures by the end of June.
