CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL HOTELS IN CINGJING
The Cingjing Farm, located in the beautiful mountains of Nantou County, is one of the most popular tourist sites in Taiwan. However, the area has been overbuilt with hotels, with over 73% of the businesses being illegal operations. Prosecutors said that these business owners will face criminal charges if serious injuries or damages occur.
Upon first glance, the Nantou Cingjing Farm embodies a relaxing, beautiful atmosphere akin to the environment in other overseas getaway spots.
But behind the facade lurks a sinister truth.
Tourists are distracted by the beautiful scenery, but unaware of the dangers right underneath.
The Nantou Prosecutorial Office recently found that out of the 129 Nantou Cingjing Farm hostels, over 95 are in violation of regulations.
Although mountainous lands that are 1800 meters above sea level are strictly off limits, it is found that over 11 thousand plots are overly developed, masking the dangers of landslides and collapsed land.
Inspectors have criticized the Nantou County government public workers for not aggressively penalizing businesses that are operating illegally.
After the big Japan earthquake, the safety of Nantou Cingjing Farm has entered the focus of investigators.
Investigators have issued warnings to illegal hostel businesses of possible criminal action suits and will further investigate whether there are any incidents of collusion between officials and businesses, as well as the issue of public workers not carrying out their duties.
