DANGER OF MICROWAVE OVENS
In related news,
We know that we shouldn't stand too close to microwaves, but exactly how far do we need to be to prevent exposure to electromagnetic waves?
The Taiwan Electromagnetic Radiation Hazard Protection and Control Association is suggesting users to be at least 2 meters away from it, and those who work in convenience stores are at high risk, because out of the 372 convenience stores inspected throughout the island, about 60% of them fail to meet the basic safety standard.
Convenience stores offer great convenience as one can simply buy hot meals anytime, such as microwave meals or even hamburger.
But it might be surprising to many that microwave ovens may have excessive electromagnetic radiation that may pose health risks.
When a microwave oven is started, the electromagnetic radiation measured exceeds 60,000 microwatts.
Since the number of people eating out is rising, the variety of microwave foods is a lot more in convenience stores.
Although the instruction indicates that one should stay at least 50 centimeters away from an operating microwave oven for safety, a recent survey by Taiwan Electromagnetic Radiation Hazard Protection and Control Association in 372 convenient stores show that about 60% of stores do not observe the principle.
In about 30% of convenient stores, the distance between microwave and the location for employees to work is less than 30 centimeters.
Long-term exposure to electromagnetic waves may pose health risks to employees. Experts suggest the public to purchase microwave ovens from reliable brands.
Pregnant women, children and elders should avoid using or staying close to microwaves.
One should stay at least 2 meters away from a running microwave oven and never stare at it.
These are the tips to minimize the hazards from radiation.
