BIG BUCKS FOR MORE BABIES
During the past few years, birth rate in Penghu County has fallen dramatically to 0.008, marking the lowest across the nation. To boost couples to have more babies, the local government is providing the biggest financial incentive in Taiwan, by giving out a maximum of 100,000 NT dollars in support to each family.
It's getting quite hard to see a newly born child inside a nursery in Penghu, as even watching an older child crawl around is equally difficult, as the fertility rate in this area has fallen to the lowest in Taiwan.
In 2006, there were 861 births and in 2009 there were 764 births with the crude birth rate being 8.0 meaning that out of every 1,000 couples, only 8 gave birth to a child.
In 2010, there were just 662 births, as the county government has shown concern for this issue and will increase subsidies in this area to encourage more to give birth in Penghu.
The compensation for those giving birth in Penghu is the highest in Taiwan with the first child getting 10,000 NT$, and the second getting 30,000 and the third getting 60,000.
This is a total of 100,000 NT$ that can be available to couples.
This new policy hopes to stimulate the birth rate in Penghu next year,
as they hope to no longer have the lowest birth rate in Taiwan.
