RIDE FOR CHARITY
A group of cyclists have organized a fundraising campaign for families in emergency needs by starting a round-the-island cycling trip that lasted for more than two weeks. Recently they have finished the extraordinary feat, but the charity funds raised so far is still below the original goal.
With cheers and applauses from the crowd, cyclists arrived the destination one after another, drawing a perfect ending to the 1,300-kilometer trip.
These brave cyclists have ridden over 100 townships in 15 days.
Even though the trip was tough, the cyclists endured the hardships because they wanted to raise funds for families in emergency needs.
Among the cyclists, the 51-year-old Liu Tien-shun from Hualien, who had also received help from the association during his hard days, joined the team and rode in order to help more people.
Six years ago, the association supported Liu's family when he lost income due to his stroke.
With the assistance, Liu's family life got back on track.
He also was elected as the chief of the village because of his enthusiasm in helping others.
According to the Chinese Christian Relief Association, over 5,300 families in Taiwan have received emergency assistance during the past 8 years.
Families in emergency needs include those that become financially disadvantaged because their family member suffers from serious illnesses, long-term unemployment, or emergencies while they couldn't get enough help from the government's social welfare system.
Currently the association has established 711 service centers across the island, and the association welcomes people who need help to visit their website, or to call them.
In order to provide instant help to those families, the volunteers in the association will visit the families,
and offer services including subsidies, mental and psychological support, and even help people find jobs.
