FIXING THE TAIMALI DIKE
The Taimali river dike in Taitung has been destroyed twice by late-summer typhoons in the past two years, and local residents are worried that it may not be repaired before the rainy season this year. But the authorities have guaranteed that the reconstruction will be completed in time.
Taitung County, two years ago during Typhoon Morakot saw serious damage to its dike in Chialan Village with 16 houses being washed away.
Also, downstream custard apple orchards were inundated.
A year later, Typhoon Fanapi brought heavy rainfall as there was again no time to rebuild the Taimali River dikes.
While it is a new year, those living on both sides hope that they will not be threatened by floods this year.
However, Taimali dike reconstruction affected residences and agricultural land with coordination of operations taking almost a year,
with residents worrying that the embankment structure may not be finished by the rainy season in the next four to five months.
The Taimali River, has seven kilometers of river that need work with the five hundred meter stretching into a seven hundred meter wide dike construction project.
Building it has been more difficult than expected, with the local and central government investing more than four billion NT$ as many are eager to see its effectiveness when facing typhoon rains.
