In an interview by the United Evening News on Thursday, President Ma Ying-jeou expressed his views on a variety of issues ranging from campus scandals to cross-strait relations. Ma also took the opportunity to challenge DPP leader Tsai Ing-wen on her stance on the 1992 Consensus between Taiwan and China.

During an interview with the United Daily News this week, President Ma Ying-jeou addressed the recent bullying controversy at Bade Junior High School and said that some principals and teachers are so afraid of problems becoming public knowledge that no resolution is ever reached.

Ma called on schools to strengthen law-related education, face problems openly, and establish reporting and resolution systems.

In regards to cross-strait relations, Ma said that there would be no reunification, independence, or war while he is in office.

Referring to the 1992 Consensus as the accepted foundation of cross-strait relations, Ma questioned whether DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen recognizes the consensus.

Without the consensus in place, the development of cross-strait peace would be impossible.

Ma further said that in the post-ECFA era, many areas still require negotiation, and that while he is not opposed to political talks, there is currently no timetable for dialogue on this front.
