Honhai's Farm Provides Jobs
In an act of charity, Honhai Chairman Terry Gou recently started a plan to construct Taiwan's largest organic farm in Kaohsiung County, offering local flood victims new job opportunities and a chance to rebuild their lives.
This plot of land adjacent to Kaohsiung County's Shanlin Junior High School is covered with greenhouses. Most of the workers in the greenhouses are Typhoon Morakot victims.
The farm was established by Honhai Chairman Terry Gou, who rented the 55-hectare plot from Taisugar to establish an organic farm and provide jobs for flood victims.
Many of the victims see the opportunity as a rebirth of sorts. The farm will be constructed in two phases, and construction workers spent a good part of the week reviewing development progress.
When completed, the farm will be Taiwan's largest organic farm, and Honhai has committed to purchasing all of the farm's produce for the next two years.
The workers say that the farm has given them the opportunity to start a new chapter, and that they now have hope in their lives.
