Dancing Their Way to Twn
They have danced their way to our homeland. Now, we are able to see the latest production by the internationally acclaimed entertainers from the Batsheva Dance Company at the National Theater Concert Hall. And what is even more special, is that there is one Taiwanese performer among the talented bunch.
Batsheva Dance Company's sole Asian dancer is a Taiwan native.
After graduating from Taipei National University of the Arts two years ago, Lee Chen-wei moved to Israel to pursue her dance career.
Lee says that the biggest challenge she faced wasn't training, but rather adjusting to her new environment. Batsheva Dance Company was founded in 1964 with modern dance pioneer Martha Graham serving as its first director.
Ohad Naharin has been the internationally acclaimed troupe's artistic director since 1990.
Naharin created the "Gaga" dance technique, which establishes a fluidity that flows throughout the entire body, and calls on his dancers to listen to the voices of their bodies.
He is also known for choreographing without mirrors.
The company will be staging three shows at the National Theater Concert Hall this weekend,
and performing some of its most well-known pieces to a soundtrack that includes Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variations, traditional Hebrew folk songs, and modern rock.
