Tree Rescuer
Out of his own bank account, this one man has shelled out 220,000 NT dollars to change the fate of this century-old tree. Instead of being chopped down, the tree has been successfully relocated to the new environment in front of the Taitung Museum.
This was two years ago when Typhoon Sinlaku hit a Wu Kin-Cheng and other workers risked themselves to help this century-old tree which was almost broken down the middle because of extreme wind and rain.
Fortunately, there was time to save it. And now, a 21 meter, century old banyan tree sits safely in front of a museum in Taitung thanks to Mr. Wu Kin-Cheng.
He spent 220,000 NT$ of his own money to help move this tree.
He believes that it is part of Taitung people's collective memory as Wu said he has a deep affection for old trees. From a youth to his old age he has traveled on the Nanhuei Highway and passed this old tree sitting quietly by the roadside.
It was as if the two grew up together as this tree has become a landmark for many.
But it was going to be cut for road widening as Mr. Wu could not bear this fate for this century old tree.
To save the tree he had to spend a lot of his own money, but he definitely believes that it was worth as the tree can now continue to live.
