The decreasing amount of mullets worldwide is directly affecting the importing numbers, thus significantly cutting down on mullet roes that are available. Even though local fish farmers have produced their own mullet roes, the hot climate is to blame for not being able to meet the demand, driving the price up by about 100 NT dollars per 600 grams.

On a sunny day like this, rows and rows of mullet roes are left out in the open to be dried. After dehydrated, deveined and salted, they are then packaged for sale.

However, due to the global climate change this year, the mullets are struggling to survive.

Even the local fish farmers are having a difficult time raising these fish under the hot weather.

Many fish have been getting sick, thus, the production have greatly shrunk, causing a hike in prices.

Those in business say that it has been more than 10 years since the cost of mullet roes have gone up. With the limited mullet roes being raised domestically, and the reduced imports from other countries, the demand will be hard to meet in the next two months.

The public should be prepared for a shortage of supply and continue to experience a surge in value.
