Housing for Morakot Victims
Chiayi County's first formation of permanent homes for Typhoon Morakot victims has finally been completed, which will provide residence for up to 86 families. President Ma Ying-jeou also joined the opening ceremony, stating that that the rebuilding effort has been more effective, compared to the September 21st earthquake that occurred in 1999.
Following the Typhoon Morakot disaster, Chiayi County and the Red Cross cooperated on the Fanlu Township's permanent housing.
The development was finally completed as the place was officially named "Ri An" Community as it was hoped that those living here will enjoy peace every day.
President Ma specially went south to participate in the ceremony.
He noted that one year after Typhoon Morakot, reconstruction progress has been even faster than the 921 earthquake.
A few days earlier, the Da Ai Village in Kaohsiung County was also opened, with residents unhappy with the frequent visits, hoping to go back to their normal quiet lives.
They are waiting for the three stages to be completed, which will include a business district and residential areas with outsiders coming to visit the shopping district, giving victims the opportunity to do business and support themselves.
They hope to do this while maintaining their privacy and avoiding a recurrence of these problems of disturbing their normal lives.
