Several social welfare groups openly demanded yesterday that the government should help the physically-challenged to solve their housing problems by offering low-cost residences. As Taipei's real estate prices keep rising, homeownership has nearly become an impossibility for these disadvantaged citizens.

Chang Jing Jing in the wheelchair is from Keelung and works for a non-profit company earning around NT$30,000 a month.

However, to rent a wheelchair accessible place to live cost her NT$20,000.

Chang has been living in Taipei for 7 years and have moved 7 times.

Chang is one of the many cases of people who is having a hard time to find a suitable place to live.

In Taiwan, the number of housing suitable for those physically challenged to the whole market is only around 0.08%, which is way lower than Singapores 8% and Japans 6%.

A civic alliance called out to the government to focus on the living rights of the minorities, because the government is constantly developing the cities towards a business sector focused direction; for example, Taipei citys HsinYi districts Futeh apartment is facing the fate of demolition and turned into a large shopping mall.

The Alliance believe that the focus of business development is important while the rights of the minority groups should not be ignored either, at least making rental housing possible for the minority groups
