Thousands of Caterpillars
A scary sight happened in Kaohsiung where tens of thousands of caterpillars were occupying the sidewalks in Zuoying district and seems not going away. It turns out that the caterpillars are coming from the flame trees planted along the streets.
Tens of thousands of caterpillars are marching on pedestrian areas to doors of local residences.
The nurses of this clinic had to get on their nerves to clean them away.
Some caterpillars were even moving on the roads and two motorcyclists tripped down as they were trying to avoid crushing the insects.
Local residents believe the worms are from neighboring trees called flame of the forest.
According to biologists, the caterpillar is the larvae of a moth, that feeds on leaves of the trees, often appearing in July and August.
Local residents believe it was the fault of Maintenance Office Bureau of Public Works, which should plant other kinds of tree instead.
But the bureau asks the public to be calm since it is a natural phenomenon.
The remark infuriates local residents, who suggest government officials to live in the neighborhood and feel what it is like to be constantly surprised by caterpillars.
