Good news for the ladies, because the restroom lines will be shorter in the near future.

KMT legislator Hwang Yih-jiau is proposing amendment of the construction law that will increase the toilets in women's restrooms. Both ruling and opposition lawmakers have expressed their approval for the plan.

Long lines are often a given outside women's restrooms, and KMT legislator Hwang Yih-jiau is proposing an amendment to Article 97 of the Building Act to create a minimum men's-to-women's public restroom ratio of 1:3.

The Ministry of the Interior amended the Building Act to create a similar ratio of 1:5 for train and bus stations, schools and movie theaters in 2006, but the amendment did not apply to structures that were completed before then.

The Construction and Planning Agency says that it will start with government offices, but that it does not have the authority to enforce the restroom ratio for privately-owned buildings.

If the amendment is passed, parks and public places will likely receive first priority.

Both ruling and opposition lawmakers have expressed approval for the proposal, and lawmakers are expected to propose 5-8 sunrise clauses and an incentive program to accelerate implementation.
