Hostile Habitat for Terns
It's the breeding season for little terns, and recently many of these migratory seabirds can be seen nesting along the coastlines of Changhua. Unfortunately, many people showed little appreciation for this protected species, even to the point of attacking them with Frisbees. Concerned environmentalists are now calling for government interference.
Although this area is filled with trash, it's still the favorite place for small terns to reproduce.
This land is located in the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, which no one looks after.
As the Public Television crew documented the small terns' growth, they also got films of people carrying their camera gear to the beach to photograph the birds. This type of behavior worries bird experts.
Others feel it's fun to throw frisbees at these terns. But this is illegal and endangers the environment.
Tsai Chiayang, who studies birds, say the small terns are a summer bird.
They reproduce between April to Aug each year.
And they are the only terns that reproduce in Taiwan. But the birds favorite environment covers the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park, which lacks supervision and care.
This narrows the terns' ability to survive.
Changhua County Government should educate people about the terns' reproductive season, and even forbid people from entering the area.
This is the only way that can make sure the terns can healthily reproduce every summer.
