School Bands Booming
Which city or county in Taiwan do you think has the highest concentration of children who take violin lessons? The answer may surprise you. Its not a metropolitan city like Taipei or Kaohsiung, but Changhua County, where you can find more than 200 musical bands made up of school children.
These students may be preschoolers, but they have been playing the violin for almost a year.
Beidou Elementary School's affiliated kindergarten is home to Taiwan's first string band of preschoolers.
Around half of the 50 students in the kindergarten participate in the band, which was founded last year.
Changhua County has Taiwan's highest concentration of children who take musical instrument classes, with 236 musical bands at 170 elementary schools.
Two years ago, 2,500 students from urban and rural areas around the county performed in a large-scale concert at Changhua Stadium.
Their instructors are all professionals, and Changhua has developed a reputation for music education.
The county government estimates that the number of violin students will surpass 5,000 next year.
