The unique and self-actualized characters of Cindy Sherman. New York's Museum of Modern Art is exhibiting 35 years of the photographer's work. Eva Respini (Associate Curator, Museum of Modern Art): "One of things to remember about Cindy's work is that she is her own model. 　　All of the characters that she's presenting are in fact herself. She's her own photographer as well, but she's also her own hairstylist, her own makeup artist, she works completely unassisted in the studio to create these characters." Respini says that Sherman's characters often examine the different roles adopted by women and how they're presented in society. It's best depicted in Sherman's series called, "Untitled Film Stills". 　　Eva Respini (Associate Curator, Museum of Modern Art): "You see a roster of female types that are familiar to us through film; girl on the run, the bored housewife, the vamp, the bombshell. 　　All of these are archetypes that we've become so familiar with through film and she has really pinpointed the ways in which the roles of women have been articulated through our media and image-saturated culture." Sherman's photographs are all untitled as she doesn't want to interpret her work for the viewer. 　　And Respini says Sherman is one of the most influential artists of our time, with one of her prints recently selling at auction for nearly $4 million U.S. dollars. 　　Eva Respini (Associate Curator, Museum of Modern Art): "For the past 35 years she's been making work that really speaks to our time and the issues of our time. And I think also she has gotten a certain stature because the work isn't just coveted by collectors and museums, but because it's good." The "Cindy Sherman" exhibit will be on display at MoMA from February 26th until June 11th.
