MORE OIL SPILL FROM STRICKEN NZ SHIP
Recovery efforts have gone from bad to worse off the coast of New Zealand where a stranded cargo ship has sprung yet another oil leak. Officials say the Rena began leaking more oil late Saturday... 10 tonnes are already in the ocean... with containment operations in full swing on Sunday.
And, officials say, the new leak poses more threats to wildlife and a nearby island which is a marine reserve. Maritime New Zealand on scene commander, Rob Service: "Indications are that it will move to the north of the vessel and we are particularly aware that that puts Mayor Island at risk.
" Meanwhile, the original salvage efforts continue as broken and battered containers that have fallen into the sea are now being lifted off the floor of the ocean by a heavy lift crane vessel. Its thought there are around 40 containers on the sea bed that have fallen from the stricken ship.
