N.KOREA CELEBRATES KIM'S 70TH BIRTHDAY
North Korea celebrates the 70th birthday of late leader Kim Jong-il. The "dear leader", as he is known in the reclusive state, died two months ago and his son Kim Jong-un rose to power.
The young Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, led the celebrations for his father's birthday with high ranking military officials. [3]North Korea's military has pledged its loyalty to the Kim dynasty, and the new leader now rules the country's 1.2 million strong army.
Kim Jong-un attended another military gathering at the memorial palace where his father's and grandfather's bodies lay in state. Jong-un, who was named "The Great Successor" in December, is already showing himself to be a different character than his father.
The young leader has moved quickly from mourning to action whereas Kim Jong-il disappeared from public view for 100 days following the death of his father 17 years ago. (Simon Hanna/ Reuters)
