SEARCH CONTINUES FOR SURVIVORS
The bodies of 11 more people have been found after the weekend collapse of a Russian oil rig in freezing north Pacific waters, bringing the total number of dead from the Sunday disaster to 16.
There were 67 workers aboard the offshore drilling rig when it capsized during a storm in the Sea of Okhotsk. The rig was on the mission to drill a well about 3,500 meters deep.
Fourteen people have been rescued and 37 others remain missing. Rescue efforts are expected to continue.
The company that owns the rig has promised to provide at least 3 million rubles, around 93,640 US dollars, in compensation to each crewmember's family.
The accident currently poses no environmental danger because the rig's fuel stocks were hermetically sealed. The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated, however, a Russian TV channel reported that the incident occurred when the rig was being towed into position.
