PREVENT INTERNET ADDICTION IN KIDS
According to Child Welfare League Foundation, a large percentage of fifth and sixth graders turn to their computers during their free time, with some of them spending up to six hours a day online. Experts say that parents should regulate children's hours on the Internet, and should also monitor the sites they are viewing to avoid negative effect on the young one's mental and emotional development.
School kids are having their summer vacation now, but experts are warning that children spend too much time at the computer may be internet addicted.
According to the recent survey released by Child Welfare League Foundation, older children surf the webs five days per week during summer vacation, while 75% of them are online even on the weekends.
Many of them spend nearly six hours at their computers. Experts said that an estimated 10% of children are at risk of internet addictions.
"Some parents fail to regulate the hours their children spend online,
and oftentimes they don't know what to do when their children become heavily addicted to internet.
Internet addiction sometimes becomes a conflict between parents and children.
In the absence of parental supervision, children are easily exposed to inappropriate websites.
The research says that 24.4% of children have seen improper content on the internet, such as violent or sexual messages.
Over 50% of the children like to play restricted games unsuitable for their age groups.
Psychiatrists say that it could bring detrimental effects on children's mental and emotional development if children are used to finding satisfaction and sense of achievement in the virtual world.
"In such a crucial stage when children develop their interpersonal skills, if they are addicted to internet, it can be expected that they will have problems in facing other people.
Without the protection of cyberspace, they may be afraid to talk to people, or they may say something improper."
To avoid children from getting addicted to the Internet, the foundation is calling on parents to communicate with their kids, spend more time understanding their online behavior, and teach them about safe online activities.
