CANCER RANKS NO.1 CAUSE OF DEATH FOR 29 YEARS
[0] [1]Cancer has been the leading cause of death for people in Taiwan for the past 29 years. According to the 2010 report, heart disease came in at number 2, and for the first time in 13 years, suicide didn't make it in to the top 10 list. ##
The Department of Health has announced the latest list of the top 10 causes of death in Taiwan in 2010, with cancer being the most life-threatening disease for 29 consecutive years.
Malignant tumor is to be blamed for about 28 percent of the deaths in Taiwan last year, with heart disease at 10.8 percent, followed by cerebrovascular disease with 7 percent, pneumonia with 6.2 percent, and diabetes with 5.7 percent, wrapping up the top 5 causes of death.
On the bright side, suicide has been edged out of the Top 10 list, after being pushed back to the 11th spot for the first time since 1997.
When it comes to differentiating what kind of cancer is the most harmful one, lung cancer is considered to be the most prevalent type, followed by liver cancer, colorectal cancer and breast cancer respectively.
From this report, health experts are also noticing a downward trend in stomach cancer mortality rates, which implies that more people are aware of the food that they're consuming, and are eating more fresh food.
However, the 2010 study shows that cases of oral cancer have been on a rise, so they are once again reminding people to cut down on the bad habits, including the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and betel nuts.
On a positive note, we are seeing a slight increase of the life expectancy rate for the people in Taiwan, to now 76.2 years-old for men, and 82.7 years-old for women.&&
