[1]The Changhua District Prosecutors Office has wrapped up its investigation of Yu Shen Chemical Co., which added and sold harmful plasticizer to other food suppliers.
Prosecutors are requesting a 25-year sentence for Lai Chun-chieh, the owner of Yu Shen, plus a 10 million-NT-dollar fine, and 20-year sentence and 7 million NT-dollar fine for Lai's wife, and his brother-in-law.
As for the owner of Chin Tung Company, Pan Shu-lan, she is facing a 15-year imprisonment and a 5 million-NT-dollar fine for supplying plasticizer to Yu Shen.
The two companies, Yu Shen and Chin Tung, were also ordered to pay fines of 200 million NT and 100 million NT, respectively.
Yu Shen Company was indicted on violating the Food Sanitation Management Act and supplying 16 suppliers with more than 102 tons of tainted products in more than 458 separate transactions.
In addition, Lai and the other suspects were uncooperative and reluctant to disclose their business practices.
Moreover, they showed no regret during the investigation, and were found trying to transfer funds to other bank accounts to avoid fines.
As for Chin Tung, prosecutors believe that Pan is an accomplice in this case because there was no way she didn't know that the plasticizers would be added in food when her company sold the chemical to Yu Shen, considering that a food company is not supposed to buy large amount of plasticizer.
To clear up the responsibilities of Yu Shen's downstream companies, prosecutors are still probing the case to determine whether these companies knew that they had purchased plasticizer containing food ingredients.
As for the owner of Pin Han Perfumery Co., Chen Che-hsiung, he is also facing indictment of a 25-year jail sentence and a fine of 10 million NT dollars, for mixing toxic chemical into the clouding agents for foods.
Prosecutors demanded a 20-year prison term and a fine of NT$8 million for Chen's wife; while requesting 15-year and 10-year sentences respectively for Chen's two sons.
It is found during the investigation that even though plasticizer is categorized as a controlled toxic material, the government is actually negligent in dealing and monitoring this kind of substance.
As the plasticizer scandal has severely damaged consumers' confidence and Taiwan's reputation, the prosecutors also hope that the public can have a deeper reflection over this incident and learn a lesson. &&
