MOI PROMOTES DAY CARE SERVICES FOR SENIORS
The Ministry of the Interior has announced on Friday that a daycare program for the senior citizens is underway, in which 120 centers will be established nationwide.
The new service will be similar to those for young children, where people can drop off the elders at the center before work, and pick them up after their shifts.
In the day care center, elders are free to do some leisure activities, while some others can plant some vegetables outside the center, an activity that can help maintain their physical fitness.
The day care center even provides some physical therapy sessions and entertaining hours for the elders.
They said they felt happy to be here because they can make some friends in the center.
Currently, there are 69 facilities like this one in Taiwan.
As the population of seniors and the need for facilities for elders are growing, the Ministry of the Interior decided to increase the number of senior day care facilities from 69 to 120 within two years of time.
Besides, the ministry will offer a subsidy program with the monthly subsidy up to 16,000 NT dollars for severely disabled seniors from low-income families and a monthly subsidy from 3,000 to 5,000 NT dollars for mildly disabled seniors from families with average income.
Commenting on the government's plan, some senior daycare service operators admit that the demand is indeed big but the challenge is to find a proper location because many people don't support such service established in their community.
They hope that the government can help promote the service while increasing the number of centers.
