Although it is the season for makino bamboos, the low rainfall this spring has decreased the supply of it.

But looking at the bright side, this batch of bamboos is actually sweeter than usual, making it a great ingredient for delicious meals.

The chef first fries makino bamboo shoots with octopus, and then put some strawberries on the top. The delicious, makino bamboo dish is a combination of local agricultural specialties of Maioli County.

Makino bamboo shoots can also be used to make a healthy salad with carrots and pineapples.

Also, the makino bamboo shoots are commonly used in making traditional cuisines, such as fried bamboo shoots, bamboo shoots with stewed pork or steamed buns with stuffing made of makino bamboos, minced pork and mushrooms.

The season of makino bamboos usually starts in April and May, while Dahu, Shitan, Nanzhuan and Taian Townships in Miaoli County are the four major places that produce makino bamboos.

Due to the insufficient rainfall this spring, the production of makino bamboos is largely decreased to half of the production last year. However, the bamboos taste sweeter and the texture is even better.

To help promote makino bamboos, farmers in the four townships held a joint promotional sale, inviting tourists to visit Miaoli County during the weekends, and bring the bamboos home to make some delicious dishes.
