YILAN TURNED INTO THE LAND OF SCARECROWS
The north eastern county of Yilan has recently been turned into "the Land of Scarecrows,"
thanks to the efforts of renowned novelist, Huang Chun-min, a Yilan native, who has been inviting visitors and local residents to produce various kinds of scarecrows since last March, and so far, six thousand have already been made, decorating the local country landscape.
It is Huang's hope that the extraordinary view will help to rekindle a love for Mother Nature in every visitor to his beloved hometown.
Adults dress up as scarecrows of different styles while children play the roles of sparrows.
In the performance, scarecrows and sparrows become friends.
From the point of view of native soil literature writer Huang Chun-min, sparrows would eat pests in paddy fields and scarecrows also have their own unique personalities.
Huang started the initiative and asked people to join his creative ambition to make scarecrows using straws, wood batons and old clothes.
These scarecrows of different styles and personalities welcome each visitor to Yilan.
Huang even took tourists to take a train ride to see these scarecrows
Starting from May first, there would be 6,000 different such decoy figures, which are hoped to become the next popular tourist destination and introduce a special look into the traditional farming village life.
