LOCALS ASK FOR A CONSERVATION ZONE
In related news,
The 1,500-hectare Dacheng wetland is the habitat of many precious animals, including the endangered Chinese white dolphins.
The area became well-known after local residents and environmental groups showed strong opposition against the building of the Kuokuang petrochemical complex in the region.
Here on CTS, we are taking you to Changhua to hear what the people have to say now that the project is halted for good.
For generations of residents in Dachen and Fanyuan, their livelihood depends on the wetlands.
The vendor selling oyster pie ball under the banyan tree is the second generation of the family business.
He was working in Taipei when he was younger and finally chose to return to his hometown with wife, saying that if the petrochemical plant is built, he would lose his job.
Local residents write poems and songs to express their sadness and worries over that the beautiful coast would forever disappear.
After President Ma Ying-jeou declared his pledge to provide justice to future generations, the Kuokuang Petrochemical Development Project is halted. Environmentalists successfully prove that everyone can make a difference.
Situated at the north bank of the Zhuoshui River estuary, the Dacheng Wetland is the only muddy wetland in Taiwan, it's the habitat of precious bird species and endangered Chinese white dolphins.
But in the several wetland evaluations by Ministry of the Interior, the wetland has never been chosen to be one of the sites to be preserved.
Environmental groups criticized the political interference in the maneuvering.
Now it seems there's a second chance.
Farmers look at the wetland and picture the future of a conservation area that preserves the natural ecology.
When the wetland law is passed, the ultimate goal is to make the wetland become an important site in the world for sustainable consumption and development.
