THE EXHIBITION OF CHANG WAN-CHUAN
Chang Wan-chuan, one of the pioneering artists who studied Western painting in Japan, was well known for his free and bold artistic style. And to commemorate the master in Taiwan's early art history, the Taiwan Soka Association is now presenting Chang's 48 classical pieces of work at an exhibition.
Inspired by the food on the dinner table, Chang Wan-chuan captured the everyday life and turned it into vivid paintings.
Chang, who loved eating and painting fish, painted various works about fish, from oil paintings, watercolor paintings to even paintings created with multi medias.
Chang Wan-chuan was born in Dansui in 1909 and passed away at 95 in 2003.
He started painting at the age of 19, and was deeply affected by Japanese Fauvism and Parisian painters.
During the nearly eighty years of his professional life, the paintbrush never left his hand, even at the dinner table he would trace designs with soy sauce.
Even though he never received professional artistic training, he established his own vigorous and bold style of art.
Chang used to paint fish, naked women and scenery. To allow visitors to get a closer look at Taiwanese art of earlier times, the Taiwan Soka Association is also presenting the master's classic works at Taipei's Zhishan Art center starting April 17th to June 18th.
