AIR FORCE HOLDS FIRST WARPLANE DRILL ON HIGHWAY SINCE 2007
Taiwan's Han Kuang military drill started earlier this week, with the media attention mainly focused on the air force exercise at a highway section near Tainan city, where warplanes including F-16s, Mirage-2000s and Taiwan-made IDF jet fighters performed emergency landings and takeoffs under simulated attacks from China. And the event marks the first warplane drill held on a national highway since 2007.
The 27th Hankuang exercise got underway, highlighting the combat readiness of local forces.
The Chungshan Highway at the Madou section was used as a total of 6 jets of 3 different types undertook landing drills. This was in case major airports had been damaged with runways temporarily inoperable.
The Ministry of Defense had planned to use the Madou section to prepare for combat readiness.
First off was a F16 carrying out a smooth landing and then 2 Mirage 2000's and then the self-developed IDF fighter jets.
This operation also included the Armys special OH-58D combat search helicopter and the AH-1W attack helicopters which operate at low-altitude.
In addition, CH-47SD transport helicopters delivered ammunition to the scene and provided emergency transport and supply needs.
After 38 minutes, six fighter jets refueled and took off again. From 2004 to 2007, these take off and landing missions were divided between Rende section and Huatan, and this was the 3d major time it had carried out this mission on the highway.
Though only taking place briefly, it attracted many fans of the military early in the morning as many wanted to snap a picture.
There were even vendors on hand seeking out business opportunities at this rare military activity.
