A GOLDSMITH'S PLIGHT
Over fears of worsening global inflation, the price of gold reached a record high for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, at above 1,450 US dollars an ounce. And the skyrocketing gold prices have already taken a toll on the business of goldsmiths, who complain that they've been out of customers for quite some time.
Pure gold is used to create these images that are shiny and delicate, made entirely by hand.
And here is this 40 kg gold statue of Matsu.
It looks solemn and bears the skilled work of this master goldsmith, Cheng Ying-Hsieh.
He was quite popular at the time though gold prices have soared from 1,800 NT$ per jian to 5,250 NT$.
This means prices have more than tripled.
People who see these shining golden works no longer dare buy them, as prices have soared.
Once the favorite of many collectors, a piece which cost 900,000 NT$ three years ago is now going for 3 million NT$ and now no one is buying.
Some are afraid that gold prices have gone up but won't come down in the future.
