VANDALISM IN PENGHU
Instances of vandalism were recently discovered at the basalt columns in Penghu, which has been considered a "World Heritage" by the United Nations. However, the local government admits that as the site is a private property, it is hard for them to interfere and protect the natural resources.
Penghu's stunning basalt columns are one of the archipelago's top attractions, but local residents recently discovered two instances of vandalism in the form of the words "Chen" and "definitely."
The vandalism was immediately reported to the Penghu County Government, which says that its hands are tied.
Some of the columns are located in a protected area, but the area where the vandalism was discovered is on private property.
Graffiti was found in the same area four years ago.
The county government says that the person who is responsible will be subject to fines of up to 1 million NT, but experts say the government needs to step up efforts to protect the columns until the area is designated a geological park.
The county government is currently discussing with the landowner the possibility of putting up signs for tourists.
However, experts say that setting up barriers to prevent tourists from coming into close or direct contact with the columns would be the best form of protection.
