Following a series of recent death-by-overwork cases, labor groups now demand the government to step in and address the issue. Meanwhile, an alliance has also been formed by families of the victims to promote policies on the prevention of job-related-exhaustion.

The recent deaths of a Nanya Technology engineer, Ubus driver, HTC engineer, Chien Hsiang security personnel, Taitung domestic violence center social worker, and Wintek dispatch worker have all been attributed to death from overwork.

Labor organizations say that Taiwan has become an "overworked island," and staged a moment of silence for the deceased outside the Executive Yuan on Tuesday.

The parents of the Nanya engineer, Mr. and Mrs. Hsu, couldn't hold back their tears and expressed hopes that the government would take action to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Mr. Hsu further called on the government to abolish Article 84-1 of the Labor Standards Act and guarantee every worker the right to normal working hours.

The Hsus also said that the government should follow Japan and South Korea in establishing criminal liability in death from overwork cases.

Victims and their families have launched a campaign to promote overwork prevention policies.
