SAVING JEENG-MIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Yunlin County Department of Education is planning to eliminate a local elementary school in order to use the site for setting up a new art school. But the project has met with strong disapproval from many local residents, who argue that the existing campus should be preserved for its extraordinary landscape, as well as for the rights of its students.
Yunlin County's Huwei Township, Jeeng Min Elementary School has a number of air-raid shelters,
because Huwei was once an Air Force pilot training base and the target of enemy bombing.
Recently, the county government wants to merge and eliminate the school, turning into a new arts school.
Local parents and other citizens oppose this action as they believe the county government has not fully expressed their plan and have not addressed the issue of students studying in this ideal environment.
Furthermore, many of the students here are from rural communities and need more care.
Yunlin County Government said that its art school plan is not fully developed, and in the future a public meeting will be held with local citizens.
Furthermore, they will not force existing teachers and students to leave, but hope to have healthy communication between both sides to achieve these results.
