EX-HEALTH MINISTER'S "BAG OF COURAGE AND COMPASSION" SOLD FOR $5 MILLION
Call it the most valuable satchel on the island. In an effort to raise funds for families that cannot afford to pay for health insurance, former health minister Yaung Chih-liang recently put up his own used satchel for auction online, which was eventually sold for a whooping five million and nine hundred NT dollars. And the winning bidder turned out to be no other than Terry Gou, the richest man in Taiwan.
At 11 o'clock, former health minister Yaung Chih-liang met with the winning bidder of his old briefcase, Terry Gou, chairman of the world's largest electronic maker Hon Hai Group.
Yaung autographed it and wrote the Chinese characters for gratitude on it while
Gou wrote on the briefcase: A bag filled with courage and love.
Yaung bought the briefcase for over 3,000 NTD and used it for more than 5 years.
He auctioned it off online to raise fund for people who cannot afford to pay their health insurance premiums.
Gou handed Yaung a receipt showing that he had paid NT$5,000,900 as the winning bidder in the briefcase auction and Yaung said, he would donate NT$500,000 of his personal savings to the Department of Health's special "premium" account.
In fact, the account has assisted 7,718 people in paying their health insurance premiums and has a remaining value of more than 24 million NTD. Gou's donation of 5 million NTD is the biggest donation in recent years.
Besides paying a top winning bid for the briefcase, Gou praised Yaung's down-to-earth working style and courage to tell the truth.
It was the second time for Gou and Yaung to meet but they share the same ideas of urging the public to join the effort for charitable causes and the comment on TV pundits.
