Versatile Drivers
In order to get ahead in Taiwan's increasingly competitive tourism industry, you have to expand your skill set to meet the needs of the ever-changing market. A car rental agency is currently training its employees to serve as driver and tour guide at the same time, hoping to attract more customers next year when the island opens to individual mainland travelers for the first time.
Many tourism-related businesses are currently hiring tour guide drivers, with job requirements including excellent time management, driving skills, and the ability to introduce sites in the span of time before red lights turn green.
Car rental agencies are hoping to take advantage of new revenue streams when individual Chinese tourists are allowed into Taiwan, and many are actively hiring tour guide drivers.
The agencies are holding tour guide classes after work hours, and the number of people with both driver's and tour guide licenses is on the rise.
Car rental agencies say that job applicants that already have tour guide licenses will receive a starting wage that is 30% higher than applicants without licenses.
