A 75-year-old artist, who devoted his life in perfecting art, has walked away with this year's National Handicraft Award, with his unique sculpturing and glazing techniques. In creating a distinct look, he used a mix of colors to give the layer effects, winning him great applause from the judges.

This blue and purple glaze are layered on this ceramic vase and create a multi-level variety of colors.

Su Shi-hsiung used his carving skills and six or seven layers of glaze, and then another carving to create this work which was put back into the kiln and fired at a high-temperature of 1230 degrees more than 5 hours.

These traditional vessels show a unique type of beauty involving ceramic art and ultimately win the National Handicraft Award in 2010.

75-year-old Su has nearly 40 years of experience making ceramics.

He attended National Taiwan Normal University Department of Art Technology and that year switched from painting to traditional pottery.

It took him 2-3 years to create his own personal style, and there was lots of testing of this complicated technical process to present multi-level color glazes.

He says with a smile that his carving technique is simply based upon creating pleasing works of art.

As a young child, Su was a top student in Tainan, but did not follow his parents advice and apply for medical school.

Instead he studied art and says that he has never regretted this decision.

He says that living to an old age includes a lifetime of study and continuous creativity which should never end as one should constantly be engaged in the act of creation.
